the ancient lost-wax casting technique

ADM's bronze sculptures, statues and statuettes are still made today using the .old artisan technique of lost wax casting.

The ideas of the ADM artisans are first transferred into paper in the form of sketches. Then, the skilled sculptors transform the drawings into hand-shaped clay models, also known as ""cores"", which are used to make the moulds. The moulds are used to make wax copies of the sculptures: as many wax copies are made as there are sculptures, statuettes or bronze statues to be shaped (always only small batches).

Wax copies of the sculptures are attached to canalisations - also made of wax - and then each model is immersed in a terracotta shell called ""tonaca (loam mould)"": the piece thus created is heated so that the wax melts and flows out of the terracotta shell. The space left by the wax is then filled with melted bronze. Once the bronze is solidified, the raw piece is freed by removing the 'tonaca'.

This is followed by the cleaning stage through sandblasting, a mechanical process that erodes the surface of the sculpture through abrasion generated by a jet of sand and air. The next stage involves retouches to prepare the bronze sculpture or statuette ready to be patinated.

Coating is the result of a controlled chemical reaction. A surface coating is used to give the sculpture its final colouring. The final work almost never preserves the colour of the bronze. Through coating, various results can be achieved in terms of refraction of light, allowing the volumes and shapes of the sculpture, statue or statuette to stand out.
